AGBC goes on the road this month to the Volkssternwarte München (Munich Public Observatory) for a multimedia evening of astronomy. The Volkssternwarte is a hidden gem in the city of Munich, a place where the public can go to learn about astronomy, to explore the heavens in the planetarium, or to observe the night sky with the range of telescopes on the roof of the Volkssternwarte.

The evening will start with a welcome lecture by AGBC (and Volkssternwarte) member Paul Salazar who will introduce us to the night sky. We will then enjoy a short planetarium show and a visit to the mini-museum to learn about the Solar System. After that, we will head up to the rooftop for viewing of the night sky and a laser-guided tour of the stars and constellations (weather permitting).

The late winter / early spring sky is filled with treasures such as Orion, Taurus, Canis Major, Gemini, Leo, and a wide spectrum of very bright and colorful stars, plus special treats such as the Orion Nebula and the Pleiades. And we will have a first quarter Moon and the bright planet Venus to highlight the night sky.

If the weather does not cooperate, we will have an additional lecture about Solar Eclipses presented by Paul, who himself is a Solar Eclipse Chaser and has witnessed many of these unique phenomena.

The light snack and drinks will be served on the rooftop, weather permitting, so be sure to dress warm and in layers. Even though the day might be mild and sunny, evenings out on the observation deck can quickly become uncomfortably cold if you are not well covered, so be sure to dress accordingly.
