He attended Medical School in Freiburg\, Glasgow\, Toronto\, and the University of Massachusetts. Then he received training in pathology\, internal medicine\, and gastroenterology at the universities of Freiburg\, Aachen\, and Ulm\, and he held research positions at Harvard\, the Univer sity of Milano\, and the Max-Planck-Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsri ed/Munich. Before his present appointment\, he was the professor of gastro enterology\, endocrionology\, and nutrition as well as chairman of the dep artment of Medicine A and vice dean for research and clinical affairs at G reifswald University Hospital. His clinical and research interests are the pathophysiology\, cell biology and genetics of pancreatic disorders.
