SUMMARY:AGBC Munich Monthly Event: Advancing Through Life - Successful Agin
 g
DESCRIPTION:\n\nSpeaker: Dr. Karin VanMeter\, Iowa State University (retire
d)\, Lecturer Biomedical Sciences at the Austrian Biotech University of Ap
plied Sciences\, and Independent Consultant\n\nWhat is Successful Aging? A
ging is the process of becoming older. It is associated with time-related
changes of physiological and anatomical properties of the body. We all age
  – thus aging is a topic in all parts of life\, including social\, econo
mic\, medical\, and commercial aspects. Undoubtedly\, with increasing age
an accumulation of health- related challenges and social issues/stressors
will occur. The goal of most humans is to age well – how do we define
‘good’ or ‘successful’ aging? What are the parameters\, how can th
ey be achieved\, and what can we do to enjoy aging? (Yes\, we can!) This p
resentation will discuss theories of aging\, genetics and aging\, reverse
aging\, health and aging\, as well as the commercialization of aging. Furt
hermore\, current research and insides on how ‘aging well’ can be acco
mplished will be presented.\n\nDr. Karin VanMeter studied Biology at the P
aris-Lodron University of Salzburg where she received her doctorate in 197
 8. Her research and extensive training in scanning and transmission electr
on microscopy led to a postdoctoral position with a leading scientist at I
owa State University of Science and Technology (USA). Dr. VanMeter then wo
rked at the University of Maryland Medical School for four years\, at whic
h time she discovered changes in the ultrastructure of neurons in the hipp
ocampus spiking her interest in neuronal aging and neuropathology of neuro
ns. After returning to Iowa State University Dr. VanMeter then took a posi
tion as the Director of the Geriatric Research and Education Center at the
Des Moines University of Osteopathic Medicine. In 2004 she returned as a
lecturer to the Department of Biomedical Sciences in the College of Veteri
nary Medicine at Iowa State. During her career Dr. VanMeter developed an A
lzheimer’s discussion group at the University of Maryland Medical School
\, a course in the Biology of Aging for undergraduate students at the Des
Moines Area Community College\, and a graduate on-line course in the Biolo
gical Principals of Aging at Iowa State University.\n\nDr. VanMeter retire
d early and came back to Austria to aid in the care for her mother. During
this time she started and is continuing as a guest lecturer at the Austri
an Biotech University of Applied Sciences\, and also is giving presentatio
ns in the field of neuroscience and aging.
